18 steps to improve your wifi signal

When you move to a new apartment or your living situation changes, you realize that your wifi signal is not as strong. You begin to search for ways to improve the wifi signal so you can continue watching Netflix with no interruptions. IT can be frustrating when your wifi signal isn’t strong enough to do what you need it to do.

WiFi is important for anyone who wants to stay connected. Whether you need wifi at home or work, it’s often the first thing people think of when they’re trying to get better internet coverage. But how do you know if your WiFi signal needs improvement?

There are a few things you can check that might help improve your WiFi signal and make staying connected easier.

1) Check if there are any routers nearby that may be interfering with the signal.

It could be one in another room, on top of a building close by, etc. If any routers within proximity may be causing interference, try to relocate your router or change the channel it’s using.

2) Check your device’s WiFi settings.

Some devices tend to keep WiFi turned on even when not in use, which can drain your battery and lower the signal strength. Make sure to disable WiFi when you’re not using it.

3) Check the strength of your signal.

You can do this by looking for the WiFi symbol in the bottom corner of your screen and seeing how many bars are showing. The more bars, the better the signal. If you only have one or two bars, you might want to try moving closer to your router.

4) Check your device’s location.

If you’re not near your router, or if there are obstructions like walls or furniture between your device and router, that could be causing a weaker signal. Try moving closer to your router or rearranging your furniture to create a clear path between devices.

5) Check the age of your router.

Older wireless devices might not be able to keep up with the demands of modern online activities, so if you’ve had your router for more than 5 years or so, it might be time to upgrade.

Routers do eventually become outdated, and this can impact the strength of your WiFi signal. If you think your router might be the issue, try searching for a new one that is specifically designed to work with 802.11ac networks (which is the latest standard).

6) Check how many wireless devices are in use simultaneously.

If there are too many active wireless connections in the area, you may experience interference and a weaker signal. Try limiting the number of active devices connected to your WiFi at once, switching off ones that aren’t needed, or moving them closer to your router.

7) Check whether there is an open channel nearby on which someone else’s WiFi is operating.

This could cause interference and a weaker signal for you. Keep away from routers with similar channels as yours (check out what channels they’re using and avoid them).

8) Check the distance between your device and your router.

If this is too long, you might experience a weaker WiFi signal because radio waves don’t travel well through large materials such as concrete or brick. Try moving your router onto a higher surface so it’s closer to where you need it.

9) Are there too many wireless devices in use simultaneously?

If so, try limiting the number of active devices connected at once or moving them closer to the router. This will help to free up some bandwidth for your device.

10) Are you using the latest firmware for your router?

Make sure you have the most up-to-date firmware installed on your router as this can help to improve WiFi signal strength and stability. You can check for updates by visiting the website of your router’s manufacturer.

11) Are you using the right channel?

All routers broadcast on two channels: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. If there are numerous routers near you broadcasting on the same channel, it can lead to decreased signal strength and slow speeds. Try changing your router to a different channel (check out what channels they’re using and avoid them). Keep all devices on the same channel number

12) Have you tried moving your router?

WiFi signals broadcast in all directions, so if your router is tucked away in a corner it might not be getting the best reception. Try moving your router to a more central location in your home. Check to make sure there aren’t any obstacles between the router and wireless device or computer (e.g., metal objects).

13) Are you using an Ethernet cable?

Sometimes the easiest way to improve your WiFi signal is to use an Ethernet cable instead of relying on WiFi. This will create a direct connection between your device and the router and should help to improve speeds and reliability.

14) Is your router too close to other electronics?

Routers work best when they have some space around them. If your router is too close to other electronics (like a television), it can cause interference and decreased signal strength. Try moving your router to a different location to see if that helps. Electrical appliances and gadgets can cause interference with your WiFi signal. Try turning them off one by one and seeing if that improves your connection. Some common sources of interference are microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones.

15) Try resetting everything

Sometimes a simple reset can fix problems with your WiFi signal. To reset your router, unplug it from the power source and wait 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and wait for it to start up again. If you’re having trouble connecting to WiFi, try resetting your device as well.

16) Change the channel on your modem

Every router broadcasts on a particular channel, and if there are too many networks in the area using the same one, it can cause interference. If you have a dual-band modem/router you can change both bands to different channels.

17) Add additional access points throughout the house if necessary

If you have a large house or your WiFi signal doesn’t seem to reach certain areas, you may need to add an access point. This can be done by using a powerline adapter or even just an Ethernet cable.

18) Get a new router if necessary
